Communicating For Life

Speech and language development starts from the moment we are born and involves far more than learning to talk.
Human beings use their communication skills to think, plan, organise, negotiate, understand, make sense of the world and others expectations as well as to express their wants, needs, ideas, knowledge, opinions and feelings. Because we use our language skills for thinking as well as talking, language and learning work hand in hand.
Children all learn to talk at different rates and some children naturally develop more quickly than others. Being able to speak clearly, express feelings, opinions, ideas and interact with and understand others are all fundamental building blocks in a child’s development.
Just as some of us found learning to swim or riding a bike challenging, some children struggle with certain aspects of speech and language learning.
 Difficulties with:

  • Speech

  • Expressive language (using words & sentences)

  • Receptive language (understanding words & sentences)

  • Literacy (reading, writing and spelling)

  • Fluency (stammering)

Can have long lasting effects on a child's social,  emotional and academic success.

As a parent it can sometimes be difficult to know when or if you should be concerned about your child’s development when comparing them to other children of a similar age.
You can find out more and also check your own child’s progress here

If you have concerns about your child’s speech or language development, please get in touch so Carole can arrange to have a chat with you about how your child is getting on and the best next steps.

Communication is at the heart of who we are as human beings.
